Appointed 2007. Tim Welch wrestled at Cherry Creek High School (class of 1982), for Hall of Fame Wrestling Coach, Steve Foster. During his high school years he was a two-time Colorado State Freestyle place winner and once a Colorado State Freestyle Champion. Over the past twenty-eight years, Coach Welch has been a Head Coach or Assistant Coach at Cherry Creek, Gateway, Douglas County and Kent Denver High Schools.
While at Kent Denver, Coach Welch coached fifteen different wrestlers to All-League status, and qualifying a school record seven for the Colorado HS State Tournament during the 1995-96 season. Before coming to Valor, Coach Welch was the Assistant Varsity coach at Cherry Creek HS. During his twenty-eight year career, Coach Welch has coached forty-four Colorado State Wrestling Tournament Medalist, which includes seventeen State Finalist and ten State Champions.
During Coach Welch’s time at Valor, the team has earned one League Championship (2010), placed as high as 8th in the State Tournament (2011), and placed 4th twice in the Colorado 4A Regionals. In 8 previous seasons, Valor has enjoyed seventeen state qualifiers, two Regional Champions, thirty-four Regional placers, seven State Placers, and one State Champion.
In addition to being Valor’s first and only Head Wrestling Coach, Coach Welch has been at Valor since its opening day, performing duties both in and out of the classroom. Math Teacher, Bible Teacher, Mission Trips Coordinator, and Senior Class Administrator partially describe all the hats that he has worn at Valor. When asked about his purpose in coaching, Coach Welch says he wants to “Use the sport of wrestling to instill all the disciplines the sport has to offer while developing godly men.” Even amidst seeing his wrestlers succeed on the mat, Coach Welch’s heart is for these young men to grow even more in their Christian character.
Since 1987, Coach Welch formed and directed the Aurora Gateway Wrestling Club, Cherry Hills Wrestling Club, and more recently the Cherry Creek Little Bruins, where in 2006-07 enjoyed their most successful youth season ever. During those same seasons at Cherry Creek, Coach Welch was privileged to train the Finesilver brothers, who have gone on to win multiple State Championships. In coming to Valor he has brought to fruition the Valor Wrestling Academy, now operating in its 9th year. He has been the League President of the South Suburban Youth Wrestling League on and off for sixteen of his twenty-six years as a youth coach, and presently holds that position now.
