Shakespeare: Even Better with Improv!

The Complete Works of Shakespeare, Abridged is a perfect way for our talented theatre students to hone and showcase their growing improvisational skills!

The script starts with a lengthy note imploring those who direct and produce this show to ramble off script! It was written to be altered and enhanced with all of the skills of improv that the actors can bring to it — something many Valor thespians have experience in, thanks to theatre classes and Improv Club.

To further hone their skills, directors Mr. Muenstermann and Mrs. Perry led summer workshops for the cast. Actors learned the art of adding on — saying “yes, and,” to make their workshop partner look good, without trying to be funny.  Surprisingly, the rule of improv is that the less one tries to be funny, and acts honestly in the ridiculous scenario, the funnier it will actually be to an audience.

Some of the ridiculous scenarios in which they practiced included a water-skiing musical, a 2-year-old child playing a very complicated game of checkers with his babysitter, and a polar-bear zombie apocalypse. These scenes were created in the moment by our actors, which is exactly what they will be doing on stage in The Complete Works of Shakespeare, Abridged. If you want a high intensity show with lots of plot twists and improv talent, don’t miss our fall play! Show dates are Oct 1, 2, 8 and 9 at 7:00 pm, with a matinee on Saturday, Oct 10 at 2:00 pm.
