Meet Valor’s Legal Eagles!
Valor’s Mock Trial team is celebrating a successful year of competition! The team, made up of seven ambitious students coached by Mrs. Sarah Edson, committed many hours preparing for competitions and working through a basic understanding of courtroom procedures, rules of evidence, and the study of negligence.
At their Regional Competition in February, the students played the role of attorneys and witnesses in a fictitious case. This year’s case was about a young individual who is suing a fertilizer company after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. The claim is that the manufacturer was negligent in making a product that may or may not have been known to be carcinogenic.
Our students competed against other Douglas County high schools, some of which have been competing for years. After four rounds of competition with real judges and magistrates presiding, the team came in second place, qualifying them for the State tournament for the first time! In addition to Valor’s team placement, three students received individual awards: Katie Greenfield for Best Attorney; and Anna Nordlander and Peter Heitmann, each for Best Witness.
At the State Competition during Spring break, the Valor team competed against the top 19 teams. Congratulations to Kaitlynn Clint who was awarded Best Opening Statement and the #9 Overall Best Attorney of the competition! We are proud of how our legal eagles handled the challenges that came with the competition this year. Congratulations Mock Trial Team!
