Creating Change, One Cupcake at a Time

Lucy Sarkissian ‘23 started her own company – Cupcakes 4 Change – this summer during the pandemic as an outlet and platform to share her story.  “Cupcakes 4 Change was born out of my passion for cupcakes and my desire for change,” Lucy says. “I want people to know that they are not alone and that someone cares about them.”

With Cupcakes 4 Change, Lucy bakes and delivers cupcakes made to order. All cupcakes are sold in 2s, 4s, 8s, and a dozen so that “someone can buy one cupcake and give another to somebody/multiple people who may be feeling alone.”

On May 7, 2019, Lucy’s life was changed forever. As she sat in her psychology class, across the hall two students opened fire in a classroom.  “I want to prevent what happened to me and my classmates from happening to other students,” explains Lucy.

Utilizing her passion for social change, she serves as a student-mentor with Valor’s Sources of Strength program which equips peer mentors with the skills to support others going through difficult circumstances.

Lucy readily admits to her own scars, such as suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,  as she uses her business as an avenue to support students suffering similar feelings of anxiety and hopelessness.

A few short months after the traumatic event, Lucy entered Valor’s Ninth-Grade Honors English class.  She quickly learned how to write well, which has helped her manage her new venture’s website and blog. Lucy’s extra-curricular involvement in Valor’s Speech and Debate taught her more about the social issues facing not only her generation but experienced by many around the globe.

Lucy’s specialty cupcake was inspired by hero Kendrick Castillo. Kendrick attended STEM School Highlands Ranch and ultimately sacrificed his own life for his classmates and students like Lucy on May 7th.

As far as what the future holds, Lucy plans to register Cupcakes 4 Change as a non-profit or 501c3 to continue spreading love all around Colorado.  She is also working on developing merchandise including shirts and masks that can be mailed to those out of state in order to expand the reach and impact of Cupcakes 4 Change.

Valor students who are interested in supporting the mission to spread more love should consider joining Sources of Strength. Sources of Strength is open to all students and meets the first and third Wednesday of every month in the main gym at 7:15 a.m.
