Valor’s Speech and Debate team is off to a strong start this season. Recently they competed in two area tournaments, Winter Wonder and Chatfield Chill. Continue reading for the full recap of each tournament.
Winter Wonder @Cherry Creek High School, December 9, 2017
Congratulations to Valor Speech and Debate’s Logan Borzymowski and Allie Barwind for an impressive first-place finish in Public Forum Debate at Cherry Creek High School’s Winter Wonder tournament. Borzymowski and Barwind went 4-0 competing against fifty-seven Public Forum teams, four of which were from Valor. Their topic dealt with the recognition of NCAA student-athletes as employees by the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Coming up, Valor Speech and Debate will be taking their top competitors to the Hugh Downs Invitational at Arizona State University in January.
Chatfield Chill @Chatfield High School, December 2, 2017
Congratulations to Valor Speech and Debate for another strong finish at the Chatfield Chill! Payton Case and Thomas Waggett took second and third place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and Allie Barwind and Marguerite Keegan were finalists in Public Forum Debate.
Valor Speech and Debate continues to have great success in Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum events, two of the toughest debate categories.
In Lincoln Douglas Debate, individuals compete one-on-one, debating topics concerning justice and/or morality. The December topic for Lincoln-Douglas was whether wealthy nations have an obligation to provide development assistance to other nations.
In Public Forum Debate teams compete two-on-two, arguing against each other on a topic concerning current events. The December topic for Public Forum was whether NCAA student-athletes ought to be recognized as employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Borzymowski and Barwind competed against fifty-seven Public Forum teams, four of which were from Valor.
