Lady Eagles Fall To CA, Beat Cheyenne Mountain

The Lady Eagles soccer team’s 2019 season got underway this past Thursday with a home match in Valor Stadium against one of Colorado’s top teams, Colorado Academy.

The Eagles, with a lot of student fans in attendance to cheer them on, came out on fire Thursday night, with a near goal from Jenna Siebert in the first minute of the match from a Kaleigh Kreimeyer perfect service into the box. Unfortunately, that would be a foreshadowing of the whole night to come, as the Eagles had near miss after near miss, all night long. Despite creating more than double the opportunities on goal than Colorado Academy, it was the Mustangs who scored their chances and galloped to a 2-0 victory. To make things worse, the Eagles lost sophomore starting defender Katherine Noonan for the season after a violent collision with a Mustang defender in the first 5 minutes of the match. Noonan’s play will be missed for sure, but her joyful presence as a teammate will still be felt and appreciated from the sidelines. Coach Shultz was very proud of how the girls played for their 1st game of the season, and even more proud of how they represented Christ after the game to their CA opponents, despite the loss.

Next up for the Eagles was a Saturday afternoon match on the road at always ferocious, Cheyenne Mountain High School, in what can only be called one of Colorado Girls Soccer’s fiercest rivalries over the past decade. Both teams were coming off of difficult losses on Thursday night, but this time it would be the Eagles who would come out on top! Early in the first half, after several persistent and sustained Eagle possessions, Midfielder Ryan Winingham finally broke through when she sent a 45 yard shot off of the hands of the Indian GK and into the back of the net, for the only goal of the match.
