Girls track and field finishes fourth, boys take 11th at Pomona Invitational

This week the Eagles competed at the Pomona Invitational. The 41-team invitational hosted several large school opponents and was great competition for the squad. The girls finished in fourth place while the boys finished 11th overall in the team scoring.

The girls had success both on the track and in the field. The relays were exciting as the ladies won both the 800m medley and the 4x400m relay. To start the finals off on Saturday morning, the 800m medley team of Sadie McMullen, Hannah Tesone, Lizzie Waters and Bianca Lopez ran a school record time of 1:50.47 and won in dramatic fashion as Lopez passed two teams in the final stretch of the race. The 4×400 team of Bianca Lopez, Lizzie Waters, Cheyenne Smith and Anna Hall dominated the field and ran a season best 4:03.25. Individually Anna Hall had an outstanding meet, winning the 300m hurdles, finishing third in the high jump and fifth in the 100m hurdles.  Both hurdle races set school records 14.74 and 43.63, breaking Janine Beckie’s records from 2012. Keely Jones had a personal best in the 1600m and took seventh place overall. Destiny Grimes also had a big weekend, making the finals in both hurdles and finishing fifth in the 300m hurdles and had a lifetime best in the 100m hurdles at 15.26. Avery Vieregger placed fifth in the pole vault with a jump over 10’4”. Joy Gerow had a breakout day with a throw of 105’ 1” in the discus and finished eighth place overall. Sadie McMullen made finals while breaking the school record in the long jump with a leap of 16’ 11 ½”.

The boy’s team was excited to get senior Chase McLean back on the track following some time off with an injury. Chase kicked off the year with a win in the pole vault at 14’4” and the top jump in 4A. He also was the runner-up in the 300m hurdles and anchored the 4x400m relay team that finished fourth place overall! The relay team of Buddy Nelson, Titan Birkholz, JJ Junjohann and McLean ran exceptionally well to battle some strong teams. Titan Birkholz finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21’2 ¼”. The sprint relay teams continue to improve and looked competitive on the big stage this weekend. The 4×100 team of Birkholz, Junjohann, Saupe and Reid improved on their season best to run 43.77.  One substitution of Buddy Nelson for Austin Saupe, the 4×200 team also ran well.
