Valor wrapped up the Mt. Lincoln League Championship last Friday by taking down the Trojans from Fountain-Fort Carson by a score of 42-13. The win gives Valor a perfect 5-0 league record, securing their second consecutive undefeated league championship. The victory also closes out a 10-0 regular season, which propels the Eagles into the 5A playoffs as the overall #1 seed.
The trip to Fountain was full of strong individual performances for Valor. Defensively, junior outside linebacker Payton Polson led the team in tackles for the first time this season, with nine tackles on the night, plus one pass deflection. Inside linebacker Ethan Zemla also added eight tackles. The defensive line was once again stout, with senior DL Trevor Szilagyi and Hunter Carlson wreaking havoc inside, and defensive ends Jack Armstrong, Jaden Murray and Darius Wayne applying pressure from the edge. The group combined for five tackles for loss and a sack! The defense has been strong throughout the regular season, and will need to continue to grow for the Eagles to keep their playoff goals within reach.
Offensively, the dual-headed quarterback monster of Blake Stenstrom and Luke McCaffrey once again proved difficult for the opposition to contain. The two combined to go 14 of 18 for 236 yards, with McCaffrey having both touchdown passes. On the ground, the two combined for 164 yards on 15 carries for an incredible 10.9 yard average. They each both also recorded a catch. The longest play of the night was a 47-yard seam route from Blake to Luke early in the third quarter! Senior tailback Alexis Chavez-Salinas carried the ball 16 times and added two catches to finish with 96 yards of offense. Senior WR Ryan Thibault led all receivers with five catches for 89 yards with a touchdown. Junior TE Jaden Murray also added a touchdown reception. All of this happened behind another dominant performance from the offensive line.
Sophomore kicker Brian Brogan had another stellar game, hitting all six of his extra points while also having four of his seven kickoffs sail into the end zone for touchbacks.
With the win, the Eagles head into their first round playoff contest as the #1 seed and will battle Chaparral in the first round. The game will be at Valor Stadium this Friday night at 7:00pm. Come out and support your Eagles!
