The Valor Boys Swim+Dive Team competed well this past weekend at the Jeffco League Championships. The team placed first overall, winning the 5A League Championship in a strong field of seven Jeffco 5A schools, and in an especially gritty contest with the Lakewood Tigers for the title.
In the first event, the 200 Medley Relay team consisting of Gavin Gilmore, Jack Engler, Gavin Rogers and Caleb Kim kicked things off and established the pattern of incredible performances for the meet. Next up in the 200 freestyle, Valor was dead-solid-perfect with Whittman Brown, Tristan Nieves and Braden Hunt keeping the team strategically on track with the plan for a win.
In the 200 I.M. Gavin Gilmore, Dylan Jessen, Josh Raahauge and Brennan Martin made a big splash and a big slash in the Tigers’ hope for gaining advantage. The 50 Freestyle saw the Eagles wide-open racing…making steam with crazy-fast performances posted by Kyle Birchfield, Ryan Bonniwell, Seth Lewicki, Julian Crouser, Connor Jessen, Mitch Peotter and Caleb Kim.
The diving competition saw the Eagles soaring with Brae VanNice, Aaron Ward, Matthew King and Casey Fellows racking up a BIG 4 stack of “air superiority” points for the Eagles.
The 100 Butterfly launched the Eagles’ second-half momentum, with Colin Hickmon, Jack Engler and Gavin Rogers getting hard-down-on-it and exploding Lakewood’s prospects for a breakaway. Then, the 100 Freestyle witnessed smokin’ guns and across-the-board best times from Kyle Birchfield, Braden Hunt, Julian Crouser, Tristan Nieves, Josh Raahauge, Connor Jessen and Caleb Kim.
In the 500 Freestyle, Mitch Peotter, Whittman Brown and Gavin Rogers paced to fantastic swims and a “nailed it!” showing for Valor in “the long haul.” Next, Gavin Gilmore, Jack Engler, Connor Jessen and Caleb Kim sent an unmistakable message of “We’ll Get ‘r Done” in the 200 Freestyle Relay, and Valor is ROLLING! In the 100 Backstroke, Ryan Bonniwell and Colin Hickmon dug in and de-clawed a last chance major offensive by the Tigers. Then Gavin Gilmore, Jack Engler, Dylan Jessen and Brennan Martin generated “missiles locked on” status, and cleared the radar screens in the 100 Breastroke event. Sealing the deal for the two day event in the 400 Freestyle Relay were Tristan Nieves, Whittman Brown, Connor Jessen and Gavin Rogers, ending the meet with the Valor Boys Swim and Dive Team winning the title of 2019 Jeffco 5A League Swimming and Diving Champions!
What an amazing finish to the League season! The team is looking forward to the State Meet on May 16 and 17 at the VMAC Pool in Thornton.
